Faculty

Randal Burns

Director

is an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science. He earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of California Santa Cruz in 2000. His research focuses on building parallel and distributed storage systems. To this end, he studies data placement, replication, concurrency control, failure detection, and fault tolerance in the context of high-performance computing and wide-area distributed systems.

Students

Alexandros Batsakis Alexandros Batsakis is a Ph.D. student that joined the HSSL in the Fall of 2002.
Jayant Gupchup Jayant is a phd student currently working on Data Analysis and Information processing in Sensor Networks.
Tanu Malik Tanu Malik is a Ph.D. student working on caching solutions for large databases.
Eric Perlman Eric Perlman joined the HSSL in the Fall of 2003. He graduated from the University of California Santa Cruz with a B.S. in Computer Engineering.
Dan Wang Dan Wang joined the HSSL in the Fall of 2004. He is a graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park.

 

Alumni

Atul Agrawal Atul Agrawal earned the MSE degree in Computer Science in December 2002. He is currently working for the Corporate and Investment Banking group at Wachovia Securities in Baltimore. He is customizing a FIX engine using the FIX protocol and Java based technologies.
Anjali Prakash Anjali Prakash graduated with an MSE in Computer Science in 2004. Her research interests included designing solutions to share the management of data between heterogeneous data sources. She also worked on global naming of data sets, making them secure and location independent.
Zachary Peterson Zachary Peterson graduated with a Ph.D. in Computer Science in October of 2006. His dissertation research focused on regulatory compliant storage systems, including file system versioning, secure deletion, and verifiable audit trails. He is currently a Senior Security Analyst at Independent Security Evaluators. 
David Rasch David earned his MSE in Computer Science in 2002. His research focused on file synchronization in distributed systems. He currently works in Durham, NC for Triangle Research Collaborative.
Changxun "Chuck" Wu Chuck Wu earned a Ph.D. in May of 2006. His research interests included distributed replication and global-scale file systems.  His dissertation was on dynamic and adaptable resource allocation and load placement for cluster systems. He now works at Google.

Associates

Ahmed Amer Ahmed Amer is an Assistant Professor at the University of Pittsburgh. His research includes work on data placement for advanced stores and applications to mobile file hoarding.  He collaborates with Dr. Burns on the data placement and access pattern classification.
Darrell Long Prof. Darrell D. E. Long is the Director of the Storage Systems Research Center at the University of California at Santa Cruz.. He has more than 100 publications, 10 patents filed or granted, and actively consults with industrial partners. His research interests include high performance storage systems, high-dependability computing, video-on-demand systems and mobile computing.
David Pease David Pease is a senior member of the technical staff and manger in the Storage Software division at the IBM Almaden Research Center in charge of the Storage Tank project.  His research interests are in the areas of operating systems and storage systems. He acts as the HSSL's liaison to IBM research.
Robert Rees Robert Rees is a senior member of the technical staff at the IBM Almaden Research Center. He was instrumental in the development of the AdStar Distributed Storage Manager (ADSM). His research interests are in the area of storage systems.  He is the team leader of the Storage Tank project.  He collaborates with Dr. Burns on research distributed file sharing and data management.
